June 14, 2009 Imagine the cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway catching sight of the consistent sets (waves) formed way out in the Pacific cascading toward the California Coastline, temperature in the 60s, heading toward La Jolla and the first ever Personalized Medicine Today and Tomorrow gathering sponsored by the Personalized Medicine Coalition, California Healthcare Institute and Pfizer. That was scene on Tuesday June 9th when more than 150 people from Southern California and the Southwest toasted the vision of Personalized Medicine with pupus (Hawaiian for appetizers), liquid refreshments and stimulating conversation.

It was a great opportunity for me to interface with researchers from Pfizer, University of California (Santa Clara), entrepreneurs, physicians, legislative representatives and lobbyist to learn what was new on the research front in genomic research, new methodologies to assess epigenetic changes in human DNA and to better understand how IIM’s efforts to translate the functional genomic information into practical steps is such a vital component in transforming healthcare in the US.

When I shared with the people I met how for the past 9 years IIM has been using functional genomic testing to educate hundreds of people of all ages how they might reduce the risk of chronic disease through different lifestyle choices, dietary habits and nutritional supplements based on their genes, nearly all the individuals were shocked, amazed and impressed. I came away with a clear message: we need to get this message out to more people; we need to support our assertions with quantifiable clinical research which validates nutrigenomic interventions as a low cost way to decrease an individual’s risk for specific chronic diseases. Stay connected to IIM’s website (www.iimsite.com) because in the coming weeks and months we will be releasing our latest research findings and case histories.

We invite you to be a part of the cultural shift towards individualized medicine by registering your name and email address at IIM’s website. Evidenced by the many people in attendance at the Personalized Medicine Today and Tomorrow gathering, the momentum is building like the waves cresting in La Jolla, California.
